About Mickey
Mickey was born in Anchorage Alaska in the year 1961. At the age of 10, Mickey’s family moved to South Carolina - specifically the Isle of Palms, at a time when most of the island remained undeveloped. He is a self taught artist who started drawing and painting at a very young age. Mickey attended Wando High School and graduated from The University of South Carolina with a degree in Government and International Studies. Upon graduating college, Mickey thought he would have a career with the United States State Department but life had other plans for him. After a seven year absence, Mickey had an epiphany that changed his life when he began painting again in his mid twenties. He knew then his life’s course would be as a painter.
Mickey had earned a few awards when he attended Wando High School, but the award that changed his direction and set him into the groove that would take him through life was when he received the Mayors Award: The Best In Show at the Piccalo Spoleto festival in 1990… from that moment on, he has painted as a professional artist. His work remains inspired by the spiritual and romantic beauty of the lowcountry that he fell in love with as a child.
Artist Statement
I paint my muse and my religion… the sky above me, the land under my feet… and sea that surrounds me… when I immerse myself in this world I wander in the wilderness without being lost… the natural world has many many moods and can be unpredictable… serene and placid one moment and turbulent and chaotic the next, but that is what makes it beautiful and draws me to it… it is indiscriminate and honest… the subtle fleeting light of sunshine… the stars shining like diamonds… the morning sun shimmering like jewels on the ocean… a sky opening after a storm… a silent moon rising… the sound of thunder crickets and frogs… Waves born by wind and storm traveling long distances to break on the beach signifying the journey life takes us on… the changing seasons… falling leaves… new vibrant marsh grass… migrating butterflies through tangled gardens in the dunes… rainbows and the color of rain… the sun breaking the ocean bend… the afterglow that lingers for an eternity before surrendering to the night… the blue hour of dawn and dusk… I paint the natural world… the sensual world around me that is ever changing… majestic and magnificent
